I often look at well designed items and think "I'd never have thought of that and damn it's expensive, but I can damn well make it". That's what led to the creation of my own aircraft inspired coffee table.

I had no I idea how the shop bought items were made but I figured a good start would be to buy something the right shape and wrap aluminium sheet around it; I knew it would therefore be a heavy lump so decided to take some weight out by drilling large holes all over it.

As it turns out, shaping 1mm aluminium around corners is harder than I thought, so the first attempt at corners didn’t turn out as I’d have liked. By that point, I’d figured out a way to make them look neater and made corner pieces that I think add to it.

I wanted the inside surfaces to be aged, brown leather and something I learned was leather is expensive! But old sofas on eBay are not. I won a 3 seater leather sofa for 99p, ripped all the leather off and used that.
